On Tuesday, July 12, 2022 Between the Towers will go into the next round, again live and in color. Our topic this time will be “Financial literacy.” Okay, why is that? Well, we notice that more and more young companies want to take up this topic and provide financial knowledge. Be it in the area of investment, account or loans, etc. So we asked ourselves, “What is the reason for this and what is the current status quo in terms of financial education in Germany?”
We look forward to interesting insights and discussion with Sven Schumann (Deutsche Börse & Co-Chair of the Board, Bündnis Ökonomische Bildung Deutschland), Christoph Krüger (Teacher & Deputy Headmaster, Schulgelaber.de) and Sophie Thurner (Founder & Co-CEO, Beatvest).

Financial literacy is a topic that should concern us all. Above all, a country like Germany is dependent on intellectual knowledge. Especially in view of the aging population. However, it was not only the Corona pandemic that showed that the German education system and the equipment of schools are in need of improvement. Back in 2015, the schoolgirl Naina triggered a heated discussion with a post on Twitter. Her post was about the learning content in German schools. What’s the point of being able to analyze poetry later on? At the same time, there are many young startups that explicitly target the young generation with their offerings (e.g. Ruuky, founder Jes here at one of the last events, or Bling, which was already on our podcast). In the same way, more and more young companies are emerging that want to impart financial knowledge in the area of investment. What part of this should actually be done by the school or is it already good the way it is at the moment?
Has anything changed in recent years? Or does the trend of #klarnaschulden on TikTok and Co. show that it is rather going in the wrong direction? And how can this knowledge gap be addressed outside of school? We want to answer all these questions and more in the upcoming BtT.
